While it may look simple, every feature has a purpose. This one even serves as an assembly tool for a custom shaft, proving that even the supporting pieces play a critical role in the bigger picture.
Finished with a final tapped feature to complete the job.

We love a challenge.
For this project, our team took a customer-provided sample and reverse engineered it into a fully manufacturable component — balancing tight tolerances (within just a few thousandths), complex features, and heat treatment planning to make sure the final part performed exactly as intended.
Projects like these are why we do what we do: solving machining challenges and turning “can this even be made?” into “when do you need it?”

Precision Shaft

We recently crafted this shaft from 15-5 stainless steel. After precise machining, it will undergo passivation—a vital process that forms a protective oxide layer, significantly boosting corrosion resistance and extending metal durability.
Final Specs: 8.5” long and just over 5” in diameter.

HM recently manufactured this intricate spline with custom grooves from 4140 steel.

Shown here is what we start with to the final product. For this specific project, these pieces start off by being heat treated before coming to our CNC lathe to be profiled. It then is sent to our CNC mill and CNC hobber before a final heat treating process. Once the splines are completed, they are thoroughly checked by our quality department using our CMM machine.

HM has manufactured a 16.3” long compressor shaft made of 15-5 stainless steel hardened up to 36 HRC.

This part will eventually have an internal spline on either end and thread on the body of the shaft. The shaft has been ultrasonic tested to ensure no irregularities within the grain of the material.

HM Manufactured a custom spoke-spline shaft, specifically designed for the food processing industry.

Made from 17-4 stainless steel and heat treated, this piece is 12-5/8” long, and splined on one end to drive the roller. Additionally there’s a ½” bore running all the way through with counterbores that have tight tolerances throughout. Lastly there are 22 sets of spikes, which adds up to over 370 spikes overall. We utilized our CNC hobbing, turning, 5-axis milling capabilities and ID grinding, to develop this piece.

HM Manufacturing has machined an external spline shaft with two different special pitches timed together with milled flats.

HM Manufactured an internal cut spline with 11 teeth and 16/32 pitch from 4340 steel.

With milled holes and slots to attach to other parts, this spline’s matting parts have counterbore o-rings to keep out contaminants. We utilized our CNC milling, internal gear shaping, turning and hobbing capabilities while manufacturing this spline.
